PERFORMANCE GUIDELINES FOR VOCAL SOLOISTS
1. Please bring an extra copy of your vocal music for adjudicators to review.
2. Please be on time for your performance. If you have a performance time conflict, please come to the adjudicators when you first arrive at the festival. All efforts will be made to accommodate your scheduling needs; however, no guarantees can be made because of the scheduling needs of other participants.
3. Be prepared to introduce the title, composer and show/opera/or song cycle title, if applicable, of the piece which you intend to sing. If you intend to sing in a foreign language, please inform your audience what the song or aria is about. A literal translation is not necessary; however, a basic synopsis would be appreciated.
4. Acknowledge your accompanist by name to the audience.
5. If you are using recorded accompaniment, make sure your recording is “music minus one” or “accompaniment only.” You will not be permitted to sing along with another voice on the recording. Back-up vocals are permitted, however you must sing the melody alone so that we can distinguish your voice.
6. Do not try to acquire an accompanist in the performance area. Try to arrange for an accompanist prior to the festival.
7. Please bring a portable CD/tape player with you in case we experience technical difficulties with the equipment provided at the festival. You should know how to operate this equipment if you are planning to use it during your performance.
8. Refrain from talking and commenting on other performances while they are in progress. Even a well-intended comment can be distracting to the audience and performer alike.
9. Turn off cell phones before entering the performance area. No flash photography during performances please.
10. Remember to enjoy yourself. Relaxation promotes better singing.
Please pass this information along to your vocal performers/teachers of music. These guidelines were prepared by the vocal adjudicators and should help the student present a more professional performance.
