2008 saw our first Ice Cream Social, and it was exactly that simple--a relaxed social atmosphere in a park setting, featuring ice cream, music, and charming period costumes. Board President, Roxanna Hurst brainstormed the idea in the spring of 2008, and the Arts Alliance partnered with the YMCA of Salem County and the Woman's Club of Penns Grove Carneys Point for the event each year since.
The original concept centered on the theme of an old-time social gathering which would be free for all to attend. Simply pull up a lawn chair and enjoy the band and each other's company. We planned and toiled and decorated and were very happy with the results. So much so, that we decided early on this should be an annual event.
The Philadelphia Brigade Band played civil war era music from the gazebo. Local members of the Salem Oak Singers performed. We've been known to pass out lyric sheets and hold group sing-alongs, in addition to times of simply enjoying the strummings of Banjo Joe as he strolls through the park.
Each year the concert admission has remained free and all are welcomed. The Arts Alliance, Woman's Club of PG-CP, and YMCA offer booths selling ice cream, lemonade, hot dogs, and other treats. Purchase tickets for one dollar each and redeem them at the booths for ice cream, lemonade, or hot dogs. These ticket sales cover the cost of the band.
Please plan to attend our 5th Annual Ice Cream Social in July, 2012. It promises to be another enjoyable evening transported back to an easier time.
