Teen Arts

Area residents were invited to celebrate the arts at the Salem County Teen Arts Festival on March 12, 2010 on the campus of Salem Community College, in Davidow Hall, 460 Hollywood Ave., from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.   The all day event is sponsored  by the Salem County Arts Alliance and admission was free.

The festival showcased the talents of teens from school districts in the county. Professionals evaluated students' work in dance, drama, visual art, vocal and instrumental music, creative writing and videography and providing feedback. The event provided young people the chance to interact with a variety of artists as well as their peers in workshop settings. Students from grades 7 to 12 participated.

“Salem County students have been exploring the arts at this festival for over 30 years,” said Roxanna Hurst, president of the Arts Alliance of Salem County. “It's the only event that brings the school districts together to focus on art and creativity in all the artistic disciplines.”

Workshops offered throughout the day provided students the opportunity to explore creative pursuits such as jewelry making, knitting, poetry, graphic arts, leather and playwriting. Other workshops focused on performance in drama and vocal music.

The other aspect of the festival is its traveling art exhibit. For the past two years the Arts Alliance has coordinated a local traveling exhibit that visited businesses in our communities.

The touring art exhibit from the March 2010 Teen Arts Festival will soon be on display at local businesses.   Please check back for a site listing.

“We're very grateful to these companies for hosting last year's selected works,” Hurst said. “We look forward to working with them again and we invite other local businesses to join the exhibit schedule this year. It's a great way to share the wonderful work of these talented young people.”

Local businesses interested in hosting artwork from the Teen Arts Festival may call the Arts Alliance office at 299-7434. The exhibit will be available to travel to different locations in the county after the Teen Arts Showcase in April.
